Frequently Asked Questions

Why are you working in Nigeria?
A: We believe God called us to serve Him in Nigeria to proclaim His love in all we do as a family, in medical care of the sick, in helping the needy and those living with HIV/AIDS.

What is your house like?
A: We live inside the walled compound of Evangel Hospital in the city of Jos. Our house is a cement block four bedroom house with a large yard. The weather is so moderate we do not have either air conditioning or heating. In our yard we have a vegetable garden, fruit trees, tree house, play house and running area for our German Shepherd dog Mowgli.

What kind of food do you eat?
A: We eat mostly Western style but have African food several times a month. Our state is known for growing great vegetables year round so we enjoy many fresh tropical fruits and vegetables. We filter the water we drink and soak fruits and vegetables in dilute bleach to kill the parasites.

What is your children's school like?
A: They go to Hillcrest School. Hillcrest School is an international interdenominational school with a student body of 245 from K-12. The teachers are all missionaries from all over the world. They use a Christian and American curriculum  There are sports and music programs, drama productions and a great playground. To find out more about Hillcrest click here.

What is shopping like?
A: There are many open markets with little stalls selling almost anything you can imagine. There are also small shops that sell imported items like cereal, ketchup and canned goods. Dorothy has trained our house helpers to can tomatoes and fruit sauces and she freezes meats, corn and other vegetables. We buy eggs in one place, meat in another and so on so shopping takes all morning.

What is the weather like?
A: Jos is on a plateau about 4000 feet above sea level so the climate is quite temperate. It is usually in the 80's F with a dry season from October to March and a rainy season from April to September. For current weather click here.

What is the main religion? Is there religious conflict?

A: Nigeria is about 50% Christian (mostly in the south) and 50% Moslem (mostly in the north). We live in the middle zone where there has been some conflict in the past. For more information about this contact us to learn about the Discovery Times video called "Battle for Souls."

Isn't there a lot of sickness? Did you have to take a lot of shots?
A: There are a lot of tropical diseases but if we take precautions like boiling our water, bleaching our vegetables we stay pretty healthy. We also take medicine and sleep under mosquito nets to prevent malaria.

How long will you be in Nigeria?
A: We are planning to return to the U.S. for our one year leave in June 2006.

How can I send a gift to you?
A: How you can help
