Blind and Beggar Women

Many of the beggar women are handicapped in one way or another. Some are crippled or blind and have no vocational skill or trade to help support themselves. Some have been divorced and sent out of their homes while others are cast out because of their handicap. Some even come from neighboring countries to beg in Nigeria. Without  a marketable skill, begging is their only source of livelihood.

The Gidan Bege staff and volunteers visit these
women in their homes and invite them to come to Gidan Bege on Wednesdays for a meal of rice and beans and some tender loving care. The volunteers plait their hair, wash their feet and share with them the love of Christ.

Several women are being trained in small businesses like the manufacturing of perfumed petroleum jelly and sewn toys to supplement their income and help them get off the streets. Braille classes are being planned to help improve the 100% illiteracy rate among these women.
